as we all know - there are many insects / bugs that are great for the garden - so how about making a bug box to keep them nice and snug  

here is one i made today - it didn't take long to make - there are no nails or screws - what do you think  :?:

Look good to me.  Which bugs would use that then - ladybirds? lacewings ?

argh well  

it's just 3 small pieces of chestnut shingle off-cuts

each piece of shingle has two small holes drilled at top - an two at bottom - then wire threads through the holes and is tightened - then make bundles of twigs (some with leaves still on) and pack the bundles inside  

butterflies and moths might use it - but i expect it to be more ladybirds and bees

That's brilliant and much more natural looking than the one I was given for a present from a garden centre.  I shall be out collecting the bits today, as it's not raining for the third day in a row now!

I would love one  Could you send it to my mother in law in England to keep p&p low (god knows how much it would be to send it here) and then Peter can bring it back with him? What do you think?

i'll see if i can make one today - when i get back from the spud fair - i'll make it a bit smaller - to keep the weight down - but i don't think it will be that much for 2nd class post  

but keeping it on the mainland might help with cost

i couldn't help myself - i just had to go out and make another one   it took just 20 mins

along with a pic of the front - i include pics of the sides and tops of both boxes, so that you can all see how easy the fix is
