tomato.... not fair!!
« on: May 22, 2006, 15:14 »
Gave the neighbour who lives up the road some tomato plants (Roma)  he stuck them in the ground, they look no bigger than when I gave them to him about 3 weeks ago.  Mine are nice and bushy with flowers, his are spindly looking but have tomatoes forming.... one was quite big too!  I´ve just checked mine for a fruit.... nothing to be found, plenty of flowers still.

I think I understand this -
Plants produce fruit , or flowers, as a way of reproducing and when they feel deprived of nutrients decide it's time to reproduce before they die.

So your healthy plants just keep on growing until something else triggers them into fruit whereas next door's plants reckon they best reproduce before they starve.

Your plants will make up for it later.

She who grows it gets the first bite of the cherry!

Mind you, I think you should invite us over to Spain so we can give you our opinion on your tomatoes :)

Best of luck - I hate the trauma of moving house, people backing out, chains and all that fun.

And I give you fair warning, we're planning on coming out to Andalusia  at some point.

You could be nice and split the first tomato oliveview :D

My tomato plants are looking a bit sickly at the moment - the top few leaves are curled over.  The bottom part of the plant looks fine.  They were a bit dry yesterday so I've watered them well and I just hope they come back :(  I'm a bit annoyed because I neglected them a bit - first the weather was bad and then I got this cold so I've hardly been into the garden :(

one of my plants had yellowing leaves at the bottom so I pulled them off tonight.  Hope you feel better soon and your toms do too! :)

The tomatoes sprung back after a good soak - phew!  Sounds daft, I know, but I'm always surprised by just how hot it gets in the greenhouse during the day.  The poor things were gasping! :o

I'm definitely not using growbags in the 'traditional' way again next year - the plants look great but they really are struggling for room :(  I might try the 'cutting the bags in half and up-ending them' idea...

I'm feeling much better too thanks Oliveview :D  I think I had the worse of it on Thursday!
