Title: Root Veg Seedling ID
Post by: mellowmick on May 30, 2006, 13:26
Root Veg ID;

I planted rows of Carrots, Parsnips, Swede and Beetroot in what I thought at the time were straight rows. I now have carrot-like fronds appearing, in amongst weeds which look incredibly carrot-like (I didn't do any hoeing for a while because, not being sure what they would look like when they came up, I didn't want to do any damage). I also have quite large plants in a straightish line which have green leaves with a slight yellow mottling on them that looked a bit brassica-ish when they first appeared. Not sure if they're the Swede or the Parsnip. There doesn't seem to be anything other than weeds where the beetroots are expected to appear. I don't have a digital camera, which would make this a relatively easier question to ask, but can anyone make head or tail of this, and are there any resources on-line which will show me what these root vegs are meant to look like when they first appear?  :?

Sorry I can't find anything but if it helps, parsnips are the slowest to germinate.
Swedes are brassicas so I expect you've got them right and carrot seed does tend to blow about and, therefore, pops up around the row.

The veins on the leaves of my beetroot looked quite red, right from the beginning - and they seem to come up in little clumps. They were fairly fast to germnate too.

I have a tom plant growing in the everlasting tub of sweet peas, and I did not put any seeds for the toms in that pot, wonder if birds threw a few seeds about? :?

Well I have some photos of chard seedlings which are just beets in a more leafy form. I might have photos of carrot seedlings and I have some parsnip seedlings on my windowsill here in newspaper pots waiting to go out soon. I'll see what I can dig up for you.
