Title: Is it normal?
Post by: Beano on August 31, 2020, 13:51
I have a strange query. I don't think it's anything to worry about but:-
One of our chickens has always, for years, pecked and eaten, I think, wood. She has pecked, almost right through, one fence planc. Now she has started on a perch in the run. I think the other one is joining in. Does anyone have any ideas as to why? Have you come across this before?  Like I mentioned, she's been doing this for years with no adverse effects but it would be good to know why.

Some hens do peck wood and other inedible objects.  If she is happy and healthy, I wouldn't worry too much.

It is the chicken mentality - if it moves, peck it.
If it doesn't move, peck it - it might move.
If it still doesn't move, peck it some more - just because it doesn't move, it might still be worth pecking   ::)

Even with cabbage or other greens to amuse them, some of mine have been wannabe woodpeckers over the years
