Do you need special equipment to make jelly/jam?

I'm actually going to harvest my redcurrants this year (and they are nearly ready) and have no idea what to do with them...

Though I could make jelly (that is jam without the pips lol), but I didn't really want to buy any special equipment...

Hi Casey, I don't use any special kit. I just have a large pan that I use for the actual cooking. To strain the jelly I made a bag from a piece of net curtain and I just tie the top with a piece of thin cord and suspend this over a large jug usually from a cupboard handle.

I have no special stuff at all and I make loads of jam and jelly.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Thanks for that good tip Mosslane. I made blackberry jam last year but I am fed up with the pips!
Now I know how get rid of them without buying one of those posh strainers :)

I do use a proper jelly bag and it has loops on the top which makes it easy to suspend over the bowl.

I just tie a bit of cheesecloth (last year the cheesecloth was an old shirt ::) ) around the top cupboard handles

I strain with tea towels, J cloths, coffee strainers. Anything that fits the job I'm doing

Net curtains from the charity shop make good crop protectors too  :)

Lolol, oh I've been here.......I use some old net curtain strung on the legs of an up turned chair (on another one), tied firmly with baler twine, so the nets nice and tight, with my nans old mixing bowl underneath, works a treat for me, if not a bit Heath Robinson. But hey, needs must when the devil drives. I did treat myself to a good huge jam pan in my hardware store which is affectionately known as "the cauldron", lololololol
