Chilli plants
« on: July 25, 2015, 16:27 »
I have a few chilli plants with flowers in the greenhouse. They are getting quite tall. Should I be 'pinching out' growing tips to encourage bushiness or leave well alone?

I have a few like that but also some i pinched out when they were about 6 inches high. I feel it may be too late in the season now as they wouldn't have time to branch out and then fruit.

I would also leave them alone now, as it will set the next set of flowers back by several weeks if you pinch the growing tips out, and fruit setting will start later too of course

I pinch out our Clilli peppers, but I do keep them over Winter in the house and they always manage to fruit through the year.  We don't get that many peppers during the Winter, but they do flower early the next Spring.

Pinching any plant out will delay flowering, and also fruiting. Chillies produce such an intensely flavoured fruit that you don't need that many of them anyway.

We do get through a lot in the course of a year, here in our house   Fresh from the plant, dried, pickled, made into jelly, added to chutneys... and so it goes on!
