Everything is bolting!
« on: June 07, 2008, 15:02 »
Just been on the lottie and as well as my broccoli (calabrese) I've noticed most of my onions are bolting too

Strangely my winter ones are fine, it's the ones I sowed from sets in March.

At this rate I'm not going to have anything to eat at all
First timer, NOT enjoying the backache anymore!

Simply snap off the flowering heads of the onions.  Not which they are so at harvest you use these first. The broccoli flowers should be snapped off as well and more side shoots will come which are edible if smaller.

And you can eat the heads, they're very strong!

Do the flowers of bolting Brokkoli look pale yellow- green and are like a normal Brokkoli only more loose?

One of mine is doing this... is this still edible then?

My broccoli heads were too small to eat, not enough for a meal, so I just whipped them off, (stir fry mixed veg) to encourage more growth and stop the yellow flowers from forming.

I have left them and fed them and hope the side shoots of broccoli are bigger. I did put them in too early under cloches hoping for a crop sooner than usual.

May be this was a mistake and why the heads are so small.
If it rots compost it
If it burns burn it
If it is chocolate eat it

when you cut the head off the broccoli/calabrese cut a cross in the top of the stem with your knife, this will encourage more shoots.
feed the soil not the plants

The broccoli (normal, not PSB) I planted out in my raised beds in the garden MAY be bolting.

Grown from seed outside in trays then pricked out into a seed bed before transplanting to final position when 4 leaf stage.

They are growing well, and are about 12-15 inches high.  but are starting to grow florets in the centre, looking very much like  normal broccoli florets you eat....

... should I remove immediately or wait and harvest when slightly bigger?

Leave them - harvest when the green closed flowers are about the size of a match head (maybe a bit bigger) - you can leave them longer but don't leave them too long or they'll open.

Your main head should be anything from 3" upwards when its ready (dependent on spacing/health etc). The heads all start off small (of course), but they'll grow if you're patient. Just keep inspecting them every day for signs of impending flowering, if you're worried..

cheers,

Derek

Summer broccoli bolts rather easily in the sunshine, be on guard, as soon as the florets start loosening, cut them.

Don't expect them very large, you can quite often 2-3 tied together in the shops.
