Am I late sowing ?
« on: February 26, 2009, 19:08 »
Its nearly March and I haven't sown anything yet.

I'm a bit worried I'm late with the onions from seed am I ? Will they catch up ?

And also the greenhouse crops such as peppers, chillis, tomatos

I'll try and sow theese this weekend but I forgot to order aubergines so I'll have to wait a bit for them, will theese catch up?

Please reasure me. Its my first "real" season as last year I grew only spuds, carrots and beetroot and nothing else and now I will get the plot next week and I have a greenhouse I'm going serious

Thanks

I haven't sown anything yet either.  The ground is still too wet and cold, and the polytunnel and greenhouses are full of stuff that should be elsewhere!!!!

Believe me - here in Northumberland we don't sow outside for another couple of weeks in a good season. Well we do bang out onion sets in the next 10 days.

Unless the greenhouse is in the back garden where we can control the heating we don't worry either.

Just because we've had a warmish week doesn't mean that the soil has warmed up yet.  No panic - don't try and beat the weather. Remember snow at Easter last year end of March?  :D

I haven't done anything apart from my digging. Another cold spell forcast next week so don't be in a hurry. Everything catches up once the warmer weather finally arrives.

According to last years notebook i sowed my toms, peppers and aubs in the last week of Feb, but because we had cool weather they got leggy before i could plant them in the cold greenhouse. Note made SOW LATER IN 2009 :)
So that's what i am going to do 8)
As for onions..found this for you
Quote
Choose a dry day to sow onion seed, March is ideal in your area. The soil should be moist but not wet, if it sticks to your boots, wait a day or so until conditions are dryer.
So you still have time to do these as well.
Don't worry be happy.....

Thanks.

I'll hang on then

I was going to start the onions from seed in the greenhouse in seed trays then in to modules rather than straight in and things that are going straight in aren't going in until April.

Thanks again.
