"Typical British Food" - suggestions please
« on: November 27, 2011, 12:15 »
We have been invited to a welcome evening to be hosted by the social club in our village here in Bulgaria. There are several British couples living in the area and we are to be honoured guests at this party.

They have asked that we make something typically British to take to the event so I am racking my brain as to what to take.

Problems are :

Some items are not readily available here, like Beef or Cheddar.
They don't have the facilities to keep food hot so it needs to be something that can be eaten cold.
It needs to be something easily sharable.

I could make cakes or mince pies etc. but want to do something different as I am sure someone else will think of those things.

Any suggestions welcome - please :D
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

See your dilemma Angela, cold stuff tends to be of the pastry variety.

How are sausages out there? Scotch eggs? Sausage rolls, egg and bacon/ham pie?

Trouble is, a lot of what we eat is not really British any more.

Blank, I am!

Have looked at my James Martin Easy British food; how about:

- hot cross buns
- marmelade
- cornish pasty
- pavlova (although originally an Australian dish)
- treacle tart
- bakewell tart
- jam roly poly
- gingerbread / parkin
- carrot cake

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Must admit, Bacon and Egg something is my main thought, shall have to investigate further as luckily we have some nice streaky bacon in the freezer.

OP asked in November, so I wonder if the event has come & gone? If so, what did she decide on?

Hi Janey,

I decided on quiche. I did 2, one egg and bacon and the other bacon and leek. Went down very well and have to say they were 2 of the best quiche i have ever made. Others brought trifle and mince pies so glad I went for savoury.
