Some of my turnips have gone to seed. Will they still be eatable or woody or what? Thanks in advance

Hope you don't mind me diving in on your post but how do I know when my turnips are ready? They are golden ball?? I think.

They will be quite woody I shold think. Probably best for the compost now.
And as for when turnips are ready, you can eat them from a small size, about an inch in diameter.

Do they start to go woody after this size? Got loads in that are about the size you have said but don't need them all just yet.

On the subject of turnips, I planted some seeds about three and four weeks ago. They are up now. The first lot were thinned out by the slugs but the second lots are ready for thinning. Alan Titmarsh (book dated 1984 or so) says not to thin out winter turnips, as these will do for spring greens. Is there any chance, if I thinned them out, I would still have any turnips before the winter?

No they carry on growing until they are small tennis ball size. They go woody when they either bolt or get massive.
Anton, you can thin them out (it will just mean fewer leaves for turnip greens) and you may just get the turnips themselves to be big enough to eat this autumn

Thank you for your advice, sunshine.
