During a Moult?
« on: December 18, 2012, 22:01 »
I was just wondering if anyone can offer advice on what I can do to support a chicken during a moult?

How long do feathers take to re-grow?

If they are not laying you can give them growers pellets which has a higher level of protein.  Tinned tuna is another good source of protein for them, best in spring water or oil rather than brine.  The moult in a young bird is around 6 weeks and longer in older birds.  Best to avoid corn as the protein levels are around 10% which is half as much as in layers pellets.  You can also hard boil eggs and mash them up including the shell for your hens.  There are lots of egg foods made for birds to keep them in good condition.  I have used Versele Laga Breeding food pheasants & quail for my hens during moult which they love.  It contains loads of dried insects, dried egg and seeds.  You need to add a small amount of water to it and then try to put it down before the girls knock it out of your hand!!   :D

Thanks for the response. she is not yet in lay but many of the others who share the food are. I think my best bet would be to try the tuna which I also imagine they will enjoy.

if the tuna is in oil then make sure that you drain it well - too much oil is bad for chickens.
Staffies are softer than you think.
