Welcome to the site  :D

Are you prepared to use chemicals or not?

Can you describe the caterpillars at all?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes chemicals are fine, its a small about 2cm pale yellow with green bits at each end and a black head.

Hmm, have had a quick look at images of caterpillars but I'm not really an expert on them.

If the plant is still relatively small, you could either hand pick off the caterpillars, or get an insecticidal spray from the garden centre to tackle them.

You should find that the tree recovers (I hope!)

Cheers Yorkie , Next doors kids have had great fun picking them of then drowning them in the bird bath, little monsters they are.  Ive picked the odd one they missed so just hope it recovers.  Looked in the garden centre but nothing seemed to cover the problem, just have to keep a close eye on it.

I think Provado ultimate bug killer is OK for caterpillars but don't have it myself so can't check the label.
