So I have just lifted my onion crop and put it in my open woodshed for drying out prior to stringing and storage. I have some lovely large onions this year and the tops are still very green however there was quite a few a bits of loose damp papery skin on them which I remove fearing this might cause disease... was this the right thing to do? They still have a lot of drying out to do before they will be ready.

When I lift mine, I "scruffle" the soil and any loose papery skin off with my hands just to tidy them up then repeat a time or two as they dry, so I don't think you've done anything wrong.

GG - scruffle- so onomatopoeic!  I use the word scrunkle for the same action!
