Purple Runners (Aeron Purple Star)
« on: June 25, 2014, 17:44 »
How are yours doing ?

Most of my seeds came up blind but those which survived have romped away much faster than the desiree white beans I grow, the aeron purple star are touching 8ft and the flowers just breaking whilst the desiree are 4ft at best and no sign of flowers yet.

My Aeron Purple Star are doing great. Virtually all geminated and they have now reached the top of the canes.  They are full of flowers and last weekend some of the flowers had set so I should have some beans very soon.  Looking forward to finding out how they taste.

Mine have been a bit of a mixed bag... none of them are what I would consider purple runners (like the purple dwarf beans are).

They're all over the place from completely green, purple edges to a purple hue.  I don't think they're stable at all yet, maybe in a couple more generations

The red flowers are also prime targets for the birds here and although they have been stringless so far they aren't as tender or as fleshy as my usual white flowered desiree.

On re-reading the instructions they are purple on maturity (ie seed saving), not necessarily when picked for eating. Am posting feedback on his site as his post from yesterday on here has gone.

Same here, loads of variation between them, all mostly green and a bit purple splodged, but they were free and a bit of fun so I don't care.... had some sliced for tea with a mint & red wine vinegar dressing.

They have probably been cross pollinated.

Sounds very tasty!

Looks like this guy has got his genes crossed and there are some strange things appearing. Will they still be breeding true next year?

Good luck to him. He might make a fortune.

Mine are very prolific and as long as they are picked when just a tinge of red/purple is showing on the edges of the pod, they are very tasty.

Grew away quickly and are still flowering well.

Am i lucky ?. Had no problems with them at all they have out grown my White Lady by a long way.
They do turn purple not as dark as my Cosse Violet climbing french bean but still purple. they start off
green then they get a red/purple colour down the sides before turning purple as get near maturity and still stringless. Hope to find out if they come true next year have got some spare growing at home well isolated.

This sums up my experience as well.

I've no complaints regarding texture or taste with them. In fact I'm very pleased so far. Lovely
