hatching eggs
« on: May 15, 2011, 17:21 »
Out of 12 eggs in incubator only 3 hatched. Lovely three though. End of the 3 extra days for latecomers. So decided to look in eggs to see what went wrong. Three fully formed, one of which gasped and died as we opened shell !!!. I am mortified now. Should I have given it even longer ?, or would it have died anyway ?. Downside of incubators I guess, or trying to hatch altogether. I may have one more go later on in a couple of months time. But then again that was so distressing seeing that little one gasp.  :(

It is always difficult to know when to intervene.  You acted as you thought best under the circumstances so you need not feel guilty.  It is horrible to see what might have been a viable chick;  however there may have been something that was wrong which meant that it would not have survived.  Don't let it stop you trying again.  Next time you will have more experience to call on.  Good Luck  :)
Now how about some pics of your 3 chicks  :D

Thank you very much for your comforting reply, I have been feeling really bad about it since. Picture attached. Three of our new ones plus three 2 day olds we were given. Ours that we hatched are 1 gold silkie, 1 brown leghorn and one we are not sure yet but has distinctive black legs. The ones we were given are pekin bantams.
