Have you thought of ex-batts?

I would start with hybrids if you want a regular supply of eggs.  Ex-batts are okay if you just want pets, but they may run out of eggs very quickly!  they can even die on you very quickly!

Yep, if it's eggs your after go for hybrids. You should get an egg a day from each bird. Even through the winter we only missed about a week or so, and then we still got 3 eggs.

Pure breds go broody more frequently too which is a bit of a pain for new keepers, especially if you want the eggs that they don't lay while broody

I would go for the hybrid. They are hardy and forgiving of a new hen keeper and will give you plenty of eggs. Also I know this sounds harsh but they are considerably cheaper than a pure breed. If you buy pure breeds the breeder often only sells them in a breeding trio i.e. two hens and a cockerel. By the time you feel ready to care for expensive but very beautiful pure breeds you hybrids will become your old retainers.
