Under the weather!!!
« on: January 18, 2009, 16:48 »
I am sure that there are loads of other threads on here with the same or similar worries, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

One of my girls (black tail) has been under the weather for the last two days.  She has been stood on her own, all hunched up and closing her eyes.  She has had a cuddle today and yesterday and just snuggled herself up in my arms as if to say "orrr mum, I don't feel very well"

Her eyes seem bright, she doesnt have a runny nose or a cough, and she doesn't smell any different from the others.

She hasn't laid yet (hasn't got much of a wattle and comb).

No one seems to be picking on her, she just keeps herself to herself.  I have put water and food in front of her but she is just not interested.

What else should i be looking for.   :?

Maybe she's getting ready to lay :?

How old is she?
Have they been wormed?
If the others are the same age are they laying?

Has she been squatting when you go to pick her up?

Hi Vember
I am guessing she is about 22 weeks as I got 6 girls four weeks ago and the farmer who I got them from said that they all were about 18/19 weeks POL.

Out of the 6, four hens are a laying, but not the two black tails (Alice and Grace).

I haven't wormed them yet, as the farmer advised to do it mid to end February.  I have just been looking at worming products and Flubenvet seems to be popular.  Would yo advise that I do this sooner rather than later?

Not sure if she looks as if she is squatting, more of a hunched look really!

I hope that she is just a bit sad looking because she is getting ready to lay.   :?

Might be worth having a gentle feel from her vent down towards her legs - to see if you can feel an egg :?

I'd worming them, just to be on the safe side - if nothing else it will rule it out as a problem :)

Catii had a poorly hen last week - similar age and it looks very much like that had Gape worm :( Although her hens symptoms weren't exactly the same it did have a hunched up appearance.

Thanks, I will have a feel of her tomorrow and order some wormer tonight.

Silly question    but when I feel her from her vent downwards, I take it if there is an egg that may be stuck, it will feel hard (and egg shaped).    Sorry, have to ask as this is new to me

If there's one there you will feel it  :)
But be very careful you don't want to squish it :D
