Growing Chrysanthemums in a Polytunnel
« on: December 29, 2015, 17:50 »
Hello

This year a grew chrysanthemums for the first time and did well really, when it rained it did damage the flower head and I was wondering if you can grow them in a Polytunnel. I have a tunnel and as you know they get very hot, I do have double doors either end and they are kept open all summer. Any advice is welcome.

I haven't tried Chrysanthemums in the PT but I did grow fabulous Dahlias in it last year, I left both sets of doors open and gave them the same watering and feed regime as the tomatoes that were in there with them.

Yes you can grow them in a greenhouse or polytunnel.
You can do it 2 ways
Plant your rooted cuttings from the 3" pot stage directly into the soil.
The plants need to be kept well watered until the buds are well developed them water carefully as a damp atmosphere can give your problems with mould spoiling your flowers.
If growing for showing stopping dates will be different.
The old fashioned way was to grow the plants outside in pots and bring them inside when they are ready to flower.
Which ever way you need to keep a close eye out for pests such as greenfly and white fly.
