Melons or Aubergines?
« on: January 22, 2014, 08:05 »
Hi

In a Polytunnel which is most likely to succeed?  I keep hearing of people failing to get good results from Aubergines...

TIA

Melons can do fabulously well in a pt

As I am hopeless at getting any sort of decent crop of aubergines (plus they sell all sorts at our local grocer's shop for a modest price) and ripening melons smell lush ---melons would have my vote any day  :D :D

If you look in the Real Seeds pages, they have many very suited to our climate too  ;)

I'm thinking Melons too.  If anyone has a variety that's similar to the ones from Charante in France to recommend I'd go for those.

TIA

I've been unsuccessful with aubergines (except a dwarf F1 outdoor variety a few years back) and last year, with very little care and attention given all previous years run of no fruit set and expecting none again, I dumped some in my new polytunnel .... and they produced an amazing crop  ::)  So never say never LOL

This year I'd like to try melon in the polytunnel too, so will watch with interest what others say

i had better success than i thought i would with melons in my PT last year. they were late going out due to the winter dragging on so i was impressed just to see any fruit at all.

this year i am going to try and start them in pots inside early (thinking the end of feb), this will prob be a pain when they get large. it will prob take a lot of a warm window sill and take 2 of us to walk them to the PT. but i'm hoping this will increase the growing time and produce more fruit. i will report my results at the end of the season.

you could do both as I grow melons along the ground, putting the fruit on tiles.

dare i say it, i used carpet last year as a weed suppressant and to keep the fruit off the ground.

i know plenty will say carpet is a no no, but i had very good results from all the crops under carpet the family ate them and no side affects.

i will using carpet again, but this year putting a mulch under the carpet.
