I would like to know why the hens scatter the food all over the hen house floor, and if there is any way of stopping this, it wastes so much food, TC

What feed type ? I changed mine from mash to pellets because of this, I think a deeper feeder may also work ?

Ours have hoppers, but still manage to spill it everywhere, but they have good and bad days.  sometimes if the hoppers are hanging up, they eat from one side only so the hopper tips and pellets spill out the other side, they also manage to swing on the things.  then I put them onto bricks and they knock the hoppers over when they are charging around!!!

Sometimes you just can't win!!!

Mine hangs from the ceiling so they find it hard to knock it over and spill it

I gave up on gravity feeders after they kept being stolen by theiving toerags    and opted instead for large ceramic saucers from Ikea.

They are huge; about 1 1/2 feet in diameter for about £1.99 and hold enough pellets for all of mine for a day.

The hybrids are fairly sensible birds (if you can call any chicken sensible   ) but the Sussex are as stupid as they could possibly be!  They stand in their food and because they are flighty, when they go to run away they skid in it and send it flying

they do the same in the water as I have another of these for their drinking (amongst other drinkers around the place) but they prefer to go plodging in the water whilst trying to drink it.  it gets really muddy from the dust on their feet and I'm constantly having to clean it.

Stoopid birds

Yes, I think I did read it.  I may just do something like it as I've just put up my guttering on the henhouse to catch rainwater (well, a couple of the guys from the allotments did it really - I just stood and watched as they took over   !) so I will rig something suitable up to keep them topped up all day  :D
