Cooling a barrel
« on: January 18, 2009, 21:17 »
I am in the process of making my first homebrew and have got a barrel for the larger to go into.  I am comfortable in the winter to be able to cool the barrel down for drinking but am worried as to how to cool it in the summer.

Does anyone have any good ideas?

Thanks

Hi.
Just leave it in the coolest place you can find. Not easy in summer.
Keeping it cool aids the clearing process, will just take a bit longer in warm areas.

Hi, i thought of bying an old fridge taking out the shelves and standing the barrell in, the only thing is that some home brews if too cold get a bit of a chill haze. Its an old problem in the summer if you store in kegs.

you can buy pint glasses that have water inbetween the glass that you freeze in the freezer.
if u drink like me they last for about 2 pints i've got 6 of them realy lovly in the summer on a hot sunny afternoon.
although as they defrost u get hell of a lot of drips condensation from them u can end up drenched with them.

You could try and find a pub going out of buisness (shouldnt be too hard ) and try to get a flash chiller off them, great peice of kit, I use one and can chill four different kegss at once, plus its got a built in pump to condensate the font on my bar.. 8)
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
