cordless strimmers - are they a good buy?
« on: January 21, 2010, 16:05 »
I would be interested in your views on cordless strimmers. I need one for my garden anyway, but thought it would be good to keep the paths under control surrounding my allotment. Do you think they would cope with this level of work? or are they really only suited to gardens?

small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Could you cope with a small petrol one Plum? We have a Ryobi, it happens to be the one which takes other attachments, but that's not why we have it. Anyway, it is actually quite a small light power tool. IMHO, some of these electric tools aren't up to much work before they are worn out, plus I don't know how your battery life per charge would be on a cordless......

yeass - A petrol one might be better. We borrow one from a chap at the moment, but you can't keep on doing that. We have a chap on the site who mows his paths, so they are like billiard greens. But he won't ever do a bit of mowing for anyone else - or lend his machine. He also -And this is no lie - uses a ruler to EXACTLY plant each thing. And he won't speak to anyone either. Strange..

anyway, back to the subject in hand - I would be delighted for folks' views on all options!

The trouble with cordless tools is they need constant use and charging. Stick them in the shed and forget about them for six months and the batteries give up.
The Li-ion batteries are meant to be better but are pricey.

IMHO all strimmers are a pain in the butt , and no i`m not holding it wrong. :)

Suited to Gardens I think not. More suited to window boxes.

If you are thinking of a battery one we only get 20 mins out of ours before it needs recharging, and the plastic blades keep flying off. I am not impressed. CC

I have a battery one and get no more than about 15 mins out of it (though that's about as much as my arms can take!).

However, the strimmer itself isn't very heavy duty and the grass tends to get coarse and difficult to cut during the season, leading me to rely on glyphosate where I've not yet got round to digging the grass out.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Just about everyone I know who has bought a battery strimmer has given up with it after a short time. They are just too puny to be of any real use.
Get a small petrol one, and don't forget, the more you spend, the better the machine. Generally. ;)
