Spraddle leg
« on: October 09, 2010, 23:36 »
After visiting the vet this morning he says our chick has spraddle leg, but should be happy enough as eating and getting around etc. My question is at 7-8 weeks old is there any point trying to correct it ?. The vet says there is no treatment, but I have read the posts on here and just wondered if we should try to correct it. As  said she is managing very well and doing what the others do etc.

here is some info about spraddle leg

however your chicken may be too old now, although if it is spraddle I would still give it a try.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have corrected several chicks (including 3/5 that hatched from eggs bought at salisbury) but have done so just as soon as they were noticed.... ie before they are 24 hours old :)

But I have also tried to salvage two chicks that were not mended soon enough and they both suffered and eventually had to be culled.

Really you are the one who can see if the bird is going to be able to keep up with the others and fight its corner with the others......

Good luck :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Thank you for the advice. She is really flourishing at the moment, I am pleased to say, and her siblings actually seem to look out for her. I f things change I will of course see that she suffers no more. For the time being all appears well  ;)

Can she actually stand or is she spraddled onto the floor.... Is it one leg or two??

I might be worth taping the legs into a more correct position, but probably too late :(

So long as you keep your eye on her she will be ok :)

She can stand and run, but obviously occasionally stumbles. And sometimes she just lays herself down. Its both legs but never at the same time it seems. She does seem happy and content, so hopefully she will have a happy life if not a wobbly one.
