hi folks im new to this chicken keeping business and i am taking delivery of 8 ross lohmann chickens in a few weeks . On the site i am getting them from it states that the birds are currently fead on meal but can be slowly moved onto pellets . What is meal . Ive trawled the internet but cant find an answer . Im probably being completely daft .

They probably mean layers mash craig, but most of us get ours onto layers pellets as soon as we can as the hens can make a right mess of the mash, it goes everywhere. Whereas the pellets which is the same stuff only made into pellets doesn't usually get chucked around quite so much.
And definitely shop around a 20kg bag will cost you anything from £5 to £16 !!!

If the chicks are a bit slow getting used to the pellet just add some hot water and its mash again.
Most hens enjoy this on a cold winters morning.
