Done a water change last week on our fish tank and over night, the water changed to a nice shade of pink! :blink: :wacko:
Not a clue why, the fish didn't seemed to be bothered, if anything, they looked more 'sparkley' / brighter coloured.
Did another change at the weekend and again, the water is slowly changing to pink. :wacko:
There's no water mains work going on anywhere around us (that we know of), so...
Any Ideas??.................. ???

What gravel, stones, toys or ornaments etc do you have in the tank? I'm wondering about colour leaching.. Something you've recently changed or installed?

No ornaments or sand have been changed, just the water... :unsure:
We took out only about three quarters volume of water, and we even left the fish in!

I have no idea but my only suggestion is have you changed the food to something that could change the colour?

So, my brain doesn't feel like being that chemically minded right now, but would a change in the chlorination/fluorination of your local water supply react with something in the tank? :wacko:

Must be the water supply then.

As long as the fish aren't suffering.....

And your filter system is clean and or up-to-date with replacements parts if necessary?

Any change to the feeding of the fish ? In other words, feeding more food or more frequently ?
What colour is the soil around your parts ?
I ask as someone had a horse which came up from Cornwall/Devon way, the horse was grey with a pink tinge, took many a bath to wash her clean. The soil in them parts is very red, maybe something in the water.

Can you put 1-2 gallons of water in a clear container and see if that changes colour. Microbes in the fish tank might have reacted with something unsual in the tap water.

You could try collecting some fresh rain water to use next time to see if that does the same. A call to your local Water Authority might be worth while as they might know what is causing it. If they don't they might need to check your supply is ok.

I don't have any more suggestions but having googled "pink fish tank water" this seems to be quite a common problem - to which so far I haven't found an answer but thought it would be worth mentioning.

Any bogwood in the tank? :unsure:

Never kept fresh water fish, only marine, but you can stir up algae from the filter or underground filtering system, if you have clean filters and charcoal in then it should clear up

No bogwood either.
It's just a little tank, about a foot cube.
There's no new ornaments in there, just the same 3 little plastic 'trees' and an arch at the back, maybe it is that starting to degrade and dying the tank water...

Take the arch out and put it in some clear water to see if it is that. ;)

Different light condions the temperature of the water .
Both can affect alge blooms .
Test the chemical elements of the water if you have test kit.

What lighting have you got over the aquarium? And have you changed the tubes recently? (even just before you noticed the change).
If you take a glass of water out of the aquarium and hold it up to daylight (must be daylight not an artificial light source), does it look pink? Or does it only look pink when it's in the tank?
A lot of freshwater lamps are a little on the pinkish side - particularly the tropical plant grow lamps, it's possible that a water change and cleaning the glass of algae deposits has revealed the true pinkish tinge coming from the lamps. If I do a big water change ane really clean the glass of the aquarium thoroughly I'm always rewarded by the tank looking a lot brighter from outside.

Think we'll go for the removal of the arch to start with now...

Did you every solve the mystery? My neighbour was saying her koi pond in the garden had a similar problem and it was the pond food which was pink. She always used the same brand but the last lot must have been mixed wrongly.

I've just read through and was wondering if the problem had been solved too.
If there have been no additions / changes to the tank other than water it may well, as has already been suggested, be something to do with temperature and/or lighting influencing the growth of algae or (more likely) bacteria.
Apparently this is more common in swimmnig pools than aquariums.

Hi all! Am back, with a new laptop - the other one went for a flying lesson off the dining room table! :blink: :ohmy: :nowink:
Anyway.... A new pump, different food and several water changes later, the pinkyness has stopped.. :wacko:
So, blow me on what the cause has been........ ::)

But....
We've really solved it this time...
It's the colourant in the food coming out when they poo!

The speed at which the pink has come back, I may as well have it plumbed into the cold water tap with the overflow straight down the sink. :(

Stick some water-cress in as well..
