beetroot thinning
« on: May 13, 2009, 17:19 »
Hi everyone, the rain up here has now stopped and we've had a beautiful clear day (yes we do have those in Scotland!)
I have just been out to my raised beds to thin my seedlings. I have left beetroot, spring onions and leeks because I wanted to ask around before I dive in:

As the beetroot seeds are clusters and sometimes grow with two wee plants together, is it best to remove one of them to give it's neighbour more room or are they part of the same 'plant'?

Also with leeks and spring onions...I just can't seem to imagine them ever growing into big bulbous lovliness! They look so weak and vulnerable!  Is it important to thin these out (they are about 2/3inches high) yet? I have lost the seed packets!

Thanks all...still very much learning

I don't thin beetroot, just start using at a decent size. Leeks again, should be planted up individually instead of thinning.

I'm rubbish at growing spring onions, so I just don't.

Best to thin out clusters of beetroot to 1 plant. I thin out plants to about 2 inches apart and then use them as they get big enough.

Unless the leeks are very thick I would leave them alone until they are pencil thick and transplant them to their final bed in June/July. In their nursery bed 1 inch apart is about right.

Horses for courses!

I do the same as Gobs & don't thin.

I pull them small (golf ballish) & they seem to manage to push each other to one side.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Must admit that I thin the same way DD does...pick them as they grow, particularly the ones that are mostly in the way of other bigger ones. When I sow my seed, I try hard to space them well out to avoid the usual thinning problems most people have. A seed can contain up to 8 actual seeds so there's little point wasting time and money by crowding the seeds when planting.

I do thin beetroot but only when they are seriously overcrowded -- the thinnings make a tasty addition to salad too  :)

Beetroot - I sow in very small individual cells then plant out on the plot at regular spacings - thinning later when they are big enough to pull to eat.

Leeks - transplant later.  ;)
