Possibly the most northerly sweetcorn?!
« on: October 08, 2010, 15:43 »
Well just as I was about to give up on the sweetcorn I have been amazed.......

Opened a few cobs over the last few weeks and all were poor, little or no pollination. Chopped the whole lot (9 plants) down last night and was about to put them on the heap when I thought, well I should at least check the remaining cobs I guess - boy am I glad I did! ok so they're not show quality but they're pretty good for ones grown in the rather chilly Newcastle upon Tyne and harvested in October! They taste delicious! Anyone had any more northerly successes??

I haven't grown it myself, but my Dad used to grow with great success in Glasgow when I was a nipper. :)

looks like you haven't got as many squirrels up your way as we do here in Manc... all the good cobs are getting stripped on the plant or snaffled away... >:(

yeah my plot is on the new part of our site in the middle, so a good 200 yards from the nearest decent sized tree - keeps the pesky squirrels at bay!

I picked the last of my sweetcorn in Glasgow last week and one drawer of my freezer is full.
Best to choose a quick maturing variety such as Swift, which also has good cold ground tolerance.

Thanks for the advice on 'Swift' Realfood, I might try and get some of those for next season and see how they fair - going to try a bigger block next year to see what I can produce!

When I was working in Glasgow, it always amazed me how i would leave oxfordshire in a big jacket / coat and once I got to Glasgow, pretty much abandon it in the office until I did the trip back. Even in January/February.  It is so much warmer than here - Gulf stream and all those people I suppose.  But then Glaswegians do the same trick heading for London ... they always complain about how warm it is in the Smoke.

You would have kept your coat and wooly hat on in Glasgow last Winter, as the temperature was well below freezing, day and night for about 6 weeks!!!
The big freeze seems to have killed off the keel slugs, as this year there are virtually no slugged potatoes.
