Onion sets
« on: March 22, 2013, 13:07 »
Has anyone put in onion sets yet? (I mean the spring sown ones, not overwintering ones) or shallots? My overwintered ones have fared very badly. I would normally have put them in by now, I know they don't mind a bit of cold, but I'm holding off, wondering if it's too cold?

I'm waiting for proper spring warmth, but more importantly, I'd like the soil to dry out a bit first.  It may not be until mid-late April for my region.

Mine are potted up in a un-heated greenhouse. They are loving it. Just watch their faces when i get to plant them out.

Same problem here  :( I have potted all mine into modules in the greenhouse just to give them a start, don't think there will be a break in the weather for a few weeks yet  :(

My shallots were planted on 28th Feb - not surprisingly there are no signs of top growth yet (in fact, come to think of it there are no signs of the shallots either - they're under an inch or so of snow!)

I expect them to be OK when it warms up - whether they are more inclined to bolt or not remains to be seen, but I've never "unplanted" anything yet and don't intend to start now.   ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

For better or worse all my shallots and onion sets are in. The onions from seed are still in the cold greenhouse though, not particularly waiting for the weather, just wondering where they're all going to go

My heat treated sets arrived at the start of the week. Some have gone into modules in the greenhouse (unheated). The rest will have to wait until the plot is ready, which will be a couple of weeks yet.

I started my onion sets off in modules so they rooted well and sprouted already - popped them out a couple of weeks ago.
Doing nicely.

I didn't pre-sprout my over winter Japanese onions and they did nothing but rot.
Lesson learned ;) :D

My onion, shallots and garlic are all waiting to go in.  I have only just finished rough digging the plot, and hopefully will be tilling it with the mantis sometime next week if it doesn't rain.  So they probably will not be going in until the first or second week of April.

I've never tried starting them off in modules, I have always put them straight into the ground, but I think I might give it a try this year.

I've just been out to the shed to pop all of my onion and shallot sets into modules. They can have a month or so like that to get a bit of root growth before I put them out.

Got to do something productive in this weather.

I'll be making paper pots later at this rate.
