Pots Grown In Pots For Christmas.
« on: October 31, 2007, 19:53 »
I popped A couple of store bought Maris Pipers into two black bags in the last week of september just to see what would happen.

No protection, watered well, using old tom/growbag compost and a spinkle of growmore.

Im glad to say they are both spouting top growth now. A very good sign and I will earth them up.

I think its mild enough in my area to get away with it,but the next few weeks will tell.

Has anyone else had a go this year in growing potatoes for Christmas.

I have some in the garden under fleece, pressie from someone, not something I'd have thought of doing myself otherwise.  So far they are growing well, went in at the end of august, think I might dig them up end of november if they survive that long, or at least one plant, and see how they are.

Maris Piper is a maincrop - usually better to use a first early methinks.

In any case, are you expecting to get through to Christmas without a frost?

The whole point is to try to grow maris piper in a bag in early winter in my area.

I do expect frost but expect the potatoe to survive in the position I have placed it.

I know that this spot suffers less than the rest of the garden, and unless I try it I will never know.

So true.  If you harvest more than you planted, I'll never drink whiskey again.

Good luck Henry.  I didn't do any pot pots for Christmas this year, as we got blight, and I was worried it might still be around, but 2 years ago, although not ready for Christmas Dy, we did have some nice new potatoes with our New Year Dinner!

And yes G. we did harvest more than I planted!!!!!!!  so if Henry's works okay too, then start getting used to losing the 'W'    !!!!!!

WG. Photo taken tomorrow will try to post.then more pics in a month, then another on Christmas day or new years day to see.

The only protection will be the plastic bag and a ring of well rotted manure around the plant its self not on the outside.

It maynot work but I have more chance of success than you stopping the Whisky if I somehow succeed.

Cold greenhouse, but you've got a good memory WG.  But if Henry's are sheltered............

This last Christmas I didn't manage to get any as the high winds broke nearly all the glass in the littl greenhouse and the broken glass smashed the haulms to bits and they never recovered.
