Shallots rotting
« on: April 06, 2013, 22:50 »
Today I have replaced 6 out of 25 shallots that were planted in late December. Most showing green shoots but the 6 just rotted or no shoot or root and soft at the bottom.

I have never seen this before and put it down to continually wet soil. Mine is light sandy soil but this Winter even that has been waterlogged.

It has been really wet this winter.

We've only put out shallots in today.

I always start mine off inside in modules. They can get rooted while I keep an eye on them and by the time they've got nice green sprouts, it's time for  them to play outside.

Had this problem 2 year's ago, lost all my onion's and shallot's, since then i dib a hole about 4 inches deep and fill it with sharp sand. I then pop the set's in, i have not lost any since. My winter one's were planted this way and all are fine but i am going to form 4 inch ridges for the spring one's and compare the result's.

Got my initial sets a couple of years ago, they were about £14 for 10 or something daft. Anyway have saved good sets for the following year and this year I have a few failures. Can't afford to lose this lot!
Some starting to go a bit soft, but I'm assuming its the same as with onion sets in that the old bulb gradually softens and gets pushed away by the new plant?
