Has it stopped and what should I do?? help please:)
« on: October 08, 2009, 16:30 »
Hi all - I made my first ever batch of blackberry and elderberry wine. It did the first fermentation part and then I syphoned it into 2 clean demijons. Since then it doesn't appear to have done anything at all. It isnt all that warm in my home at present so I am guessing that it may have stopped. Is this a problem, ie will it start again voluntarily or should I kick start it somehow? Any advice appreciated.

When you rack,you also get rid of a lot of the active yeastie beasties.
It'll take a while for the remaining ones to recover if its in a cool enviroment.

whats the SG  now ?

How long was it in the brewing bucket for? Does it taste sweet?

If it really has stopped (tastes sweet, no bubbles at all for a few days) you may be able to restart it. See

After going in to the demijohn they take a few days to recover. If you syphoned it off then a fair bit of the active yeast will have remained in the bucket.

I usually just pour the stuff through a sieve to get the big bits out.

If cool then again a bit more time will be needed as it will slow the process down.

Be patient. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Many thanks for help so far. I dont know what the sg is - will have to buy a hydrometer (? is that right??)  When I racked it off, it didnt taste sweet to me at all.  My house is generally only about 19 degrees but the chap in our wine shop said that should be fine, I am not so sure.  Guess I will test it then consult with that website link above to decide on best course of action. Hope it is recoverable as it is my first attempt and it looks good, baeutiful colour.

If it's not sweet it is probably fine. I should just leave it in the demijohn under an airlock for a month then rack it again.
