Hi Daz, well you have 3 choices I suppose.

1.  You can dig up the grass, put some fertilizer down to give the ground more nutrients and plant in the soil, but you don't know what the soil is like after being grassed.
2. you can put weed membrane down all over and grow in pots, grow bags etc, or..
3.  you can get adventurous and put a concrete or slab floor down and still plant in pots, grow bags etc.

I originally covered mine with weed suppressant before putting up the GH.  I then grew everything either in grobags or pots.

However, in an effort to save money and watering effort, after 3 years, I have just lifted the weed suppressing fabric, placed some old slabs down the centre for a path (just bedded in sand) and dug up the soil either side, adding lots of manure and compost to improve the quality.  I am now having a go at planting things direct.

When I plant direct, which I do most years, at the end of the season, I take about 6 inches of the old soil out, and as we have chickens, I chuck in a load of chicken manure and leave it over winter to add nutrients to the soil.

If you use the same soil year upon year, it will get stale and harbour nasties.

Yes, its a good idea Grannie.  I plan to do a similar thing as I have some stock piled horse manure.

I have a raised bed on one side of mine and greenhouse staging on the other.  It works a treat and means that I don't have to worry as much about watering my toms.  :)

As for horse poo, I struck the motherload this week Grannie! Someone I met at the gardening club had a huge (probably several tonnes) pile of 2-3 year old manure to get rid of (he schools horses).  It's lovely stuff and full of worms,  Going back for another car load next week!  ::) :D
