Vinegar for pickling
« on: January 04, 2009, 09:24 »
Hi All,

Can someone tell an old fool where to buy vinegar for pickling. ?

I'm saving jars ready for pickling Beetroot and onions but cannot seem to find a supplier for the vinegar.

I bet you are going to tell me, local supermarket. then i'm going to feel real stupid then.

Thanks
Steve

Asda does in the autumn - but I think it disappears when the Christmas stuff really comes in.  I cant remember if it comes back ....  worth a look if you have a big supermarket, but you might find that the easter eggs have taken the space. They will certainly have white vinegar if you are doing silverskins.

The veg man on the market does too, plain malt vinegar and pre-spiced -  do you have a local market?  Always worth a look.

I was gonna say same thing....pickling vinegar in autumn in all big stores.

If you want it out of that season just get white or malt vinegar(depending on what you're pickling) and get a box of pickling spices.I have Schwartz ones and directions are on pkt for quantity to add.

Thanks Both, yes we have a local small market also a very large market at Thoresby.

This being my first season, I hope to grow Beetroot and silverskin onions for pickling.

I've also been on the Scwartz website looking at the spices, so hopefully all looking good.

Maybe i'll wait until nearer the time before hunting the vinegar down and probably have more readily available stocks.  :)

Thanks for the replies.

Thought this might help Quick Spiced Vinegar. You can use either white or brown malt vinegar but, especially for beetroot and silverskin onions, I find white better.

Val, do you know a recipe for the very lightly favoured vinegar for pickled cornichons (gherkins). Can see it's got bits of dill weed in it but can't work out what else :(

Tried the same one as for pickled onions but their not right.

Thanks Val

Read that earlier today (After a Search)

It is the actual vinegar itself i was wondering where to buy it in larger than the chip vinegar bottles size.

Being a man,  I don't go food shopping unless i  really, really have to.

OH says the bill at the checkout is always doubled when i go so she even avoids asking me to go nowadays.

Most supermarkets sell very large malt vinegar (check on the acetic content though as you'll need it to be at least 5% for pickling). Morrisons certainly sell a 4 pint one, as do Sainsburys, and may do a gallon one. At this time of the year they may not be as visible as September/October time but you should still be able to get them. (Must look next time I'm shopping me thinks!). I tend to do most of my pickling in September/October.
