Blight?
« on: May 30, 2010, 16:23 »
Hi all, Im really new to all this so dont know what im looking for. Just been down the allotment to check on the potatos i planted a few weeks ago, They are now breaking the surface and they are looking healthy, except for one. It has sent up 2 strong stems that are green/brown in colour. The top of 1 stem is shriveled and the leaf is dead. The other stem has a single leaf on it that is brown and has a holes in it. Is this blight or is the plant diseased? should i be looking to take it out?
Really dont want to lose the crop as its my first ever veg i have ever grown?  :(

Any chance of posting a photo?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

if its only one then rip it out, and hopefully your others will not get infected . it may not be blight but something is not right so dont take a chance

Pulled it out to be sure. the potato seed also had a large bindweed root next to it that was sending shots everywhere. Thought i got it all when i turned it over by hand in march. Can bindweed affect potato growth?  ???

Could be blackleg, there's seems to be a lot of it about. I dug up the infected plant and the soil round it.

Doesn't really sound like black leg but this link may help you to decide :

There still have been no reported incidents of blight.

This is the must read thread on blight:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
