Hi, quick question, (bit late really, as I've already bought them, lol),
"can anyone tell me if "red sun" shallots are what I call genuine shallots or are they the dutch single type", you know, the interlopers!!!,(small onions), if they aren't genuine shallots, could you give me a name of genuine ones.
It says on the label "dutch red sun"
Thanks, arh.

ps. I've put the "sturon" onion sets and the "red sun" shallot sets in the fridge until end of February ,"is this a good idea, please". Thanks, arh

They don't need to be in the fridge, just somewhere dry and cool like a shed or garage.
Shallot sets will produce a clump of shallots. It is the seeds sold as shallots that produce a single bulb :)

According to T&M it's a proper shallot

The shape confirms that it isn't a banana-type shallot.
I've just received mine, and a few of them are already sprouting :( I'll put them in the lean-to shed and keep an eye on them. If they carry on sprouting, I'll pot those up.
I know that's probably as cchilly as the fridge, but they'll be drier in the lean-to, if that makes sense?

Who did you get them from? If you tell them, they may send you more. I have had a full bag as a replacement for a few sprouted ones before :)
Just to confuse things further, Jermor are sold as banana shallot sets, but they also produce a clump. It is a french variety and they are strict about what they call a shallot. The dutch ones that they sell as banana shallots are usually seed sown. Clear as onion soup eh

Yes, clear as mud
It was T&M (again?) 8 out of were 20 sprouting; they are going to replace them - but it won't be before the end of February.
Will the 2 lots ripen at different times, or will the later planted ones catch up, do you think?
After watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwFS7HoUiIM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwFS7HoUiIM) I've also got some Zebrune banana shallot seeds
-
They will mature slightly later but the dying back of the foliage seems to be triggered by day length, so it is hard to know of they will make big shallots
Will they give you credit instead?
-
Replacement seems to be their default position, so didn't think to ask ::)
Never mind, first couple of weeks in March is within the normal planting period, so as long as they arrive by then ;)

Thank you for all the replies, in the shed then, probably colder than the fridge for a couple of days, :D, arh.

I grew these (zebrune) last year and they have been very good. They are easy to grow from seed then transplant prior to planting out in around about April. They are more like an onion than a shallot size and habit wise to be honest but they do keep well highly recommend these.
-
I've got Figaro this year, which were a 50p seed sale bargain.
Why have I never thought to plant small modules like that out with a dibber - sheer genius. That is going to make my onion and shallot planting sooooo much easier :D
-
Most definate proper shallots.
I grow them every year as they make stoater picklers.
-
I always grow these and they give a good sized shallot in clumps. Echoing the previous comments in that they are good for pickling.

Thank you all for the replies. arh.
