new potato identification help please.
« on: November 01, 2014, 20:10 »
could any of you help. i grew 2 varieties of new potato's  this year, swift and pentland javalin.

i found one was nice and white and crisp and kept well, and one didn't keep so well and turned sort of yellowy.

unfortunately i forgot what variety was what and now not sure which ones to get next year.

so could anyone tell me which ones are the crisp ones?

thanks.

Charlotte go very yellow, 3759! They're also quite firm and readily available in the shops, so they may have been the ones you bought!

They also store quite well, and we still have a bag in the shed, although they're second earlies!

According to JBA potatoes

http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/buy-seed-potatoes/first-early-seed-potatoes/swift-seed-potatoes

Quote
Swift:  A high yielding variety that produces a round-to-oval shaped white tuber with creamy flesh and shallow eyes

http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/buy-seed-potatoes/first-early-seed-potatoes/pentland-javelin-seed-potatoes

Quote
Pentland Javelin produces heavy crops of short oval white skinned tubers with pure white tasty flesh.

so could be you are looking at Pentland Javelin as your mystery spud  ;)

for a first early, then give Arran Pilot or Lady Christl a try (I prefer the Arran Pilots TBH)
