Right then Im fed up of being ripped off by pet stores so have been on the hunt for somewhere that I can buy bales of straw.
Seems to be that once upon a time you would see signs everywhere selling bales but is there anywhere where around these parts?....
Nope!! A month of looking and im still coming up short and its driving me maaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

You need to find a country store that does bales for horse owners.
-
What do you use it for min ?
aubiose or hemcore are much better in coops and nestboxes.

I agree! so many farmers gather(?) harvest(?) their straw in these HUGE rolls, almost the size of my house. I only use straw in the nest boxes, cos my lot definately prefer straw. The cockerels find a nice piece of straw and offer it to their favourite hen.. dunno if this means 'lets go to bed' ::) or even 'get in the house and hatch me a son!'

Thanks Aunty I will have a hunt through those later.
I use it in my nest boxes. Nothing like moving it around looking for eggs :D :D

There is a stables just down the road from me, £2.50 a bale, I will get you one if you like, I think there is the odd forest supporter in Blackpool today, might see if one will take it back with them ;)

is there a riding stable near you? you could ask where they get theirs

I'd deffo use Aubiose or Hemcore, no need for straw then. It's better any way :D
I got some straw bales though for their winter shelter and I looked in the yellow pages. Found a farm nearby :)

On the subject of bedding, can any member help me out ? I keep horses so have a plentiful supply of hay, straw and hemcore. In the nesting area of the coop what is best to place in there please?? and to what quantity ??? also in the roosting/perching area of the hen house what should I use in there ??? sorry to ask probably what is such an obvious question but I really want to get this right. Thank you

I only use hemcore. I put it in all beautifully like a carpet in the coop and then (because of my horsey background) I bank up the sides in the nesting boxes. five minutes after this my ladies go in and scratch the nesting boxes clear and muck up the floor!
;)

just pop into a local farm - pick a smaller one thought, and more commercial farms due use the larger square bales or even the round ones now :(. Some of the smaller farms still use the small square bales though (the bales with about five wadds size). Most would be happy to sell you them even if they don't actually advertise it.

We only use it in our nest boxes too,we are lucky in that a friend buys it in bulk and lets us buy a couple of square bales from her at a time :)£1.50 a bale .By the way Teapots will have a bale for you to pick up when your down here next :D :D
