I'm trying to get my head around crop rotations so that I can decide what to put where. All that I've read talks about the need for keeping brassicas & potatoes apart because of the lime thing. But what I want to know is - do I need to grow brassicas at all?
I wouldn't mind trying some cavolo nero, but otherwise I'm not really that fussed about them - I'd prefer to concentrate on salad leaves, legumes, chards, tomatoes & soft fruit, and Husband wants to grow potatoes. But if I need them for some soil benefit, I'll have to try to fit some in I suppose.

You don't have to grow anything, grow what you want to eat

And cavolo nero is worth growing. ;)

You don't need brassicas for crop rotation. The rotation plan just slots them into the cycle at the time the soil conditions suit them best and most crops other than them prefer slightly acidic soil anyway.
Soft fruit is a good choice. So expensive to buy and so easy to grow. Put Autumn Bliss raspberries on your list - they are fab 8)

Dont you like eating, cauli, brussels, broccoli, kohlrabi, kale or even radish, turnip or swede?? :)
Like MOS said, grow what you want to eat...

For years I grew no brassicas - as others say, grow what you want to grow, and fit the rotation in around that. You will find several versions of what sequence to follow for rotational purposes - which takes the pressure off a bit because if the experts can't agree, it can't be all that vitally vital to get it in one particular sequence!

Swedes are brassicas?! Oops - cross out kale from that area....

No, I do not think, it's that vital in the home garden, where everything gets jammed in a small space anyway, but does help not to grow the same crop in the same place.
Anyhow, @ Katie: I am shocked. Someone, who does not want to grow brassica. Be happy. All the trouble is with them in the home garden. And every other thing, one wants to eat is one.

Katie, you just need to grow what you want to eat

that's what I said near the top

What's so great about Gurgle images, is that you can copy a word or two, then see what the result is straight away!
That 'cavolo nero' looks fantastic!
Ask Mrs Growster before buying please...;0)

Excellent with lentils and carrots in the pot, too. :D

Right Gobs! (Is that really your name...?)
You're on the list for next year!

Saute some shallots, smoked bacon and garlic in olive oil. Add shredded cavolo nero. You don't know what you are missing.

Phew! Not too funny. But almost. Gabi.
What's your point, if any?

Apols Gabi, just liked what you said!
Always after a recipe with lentils, we bought a huge bag some time ago and they're still hanging around!
Grovelster...;0)

OK then, I wasn't certain how to take it, what you meant. As further up I'm also trying to grow some lentils this year, hopefully.
I shall report if it happens. :)

When I first got my plot, I often wondered how to fit round the crop rotation idea too ... I was a bit of a fussy eater and didn't like cabbage, caulis, sprouts, and I wasn't too fussed about broccoli, radish, turnips or swede, and never tasted kale. As long as you dig in stuff to improve soil fertility, it didn't really matter.
However, over time I would grew just a few to see if I could, and then realised what I had been missing out on (but I still don't like cauliflower or kale) although the small amount I grow probably doesn't cover a true crop rotation. However, I have been growing a mustard green manure especially prior to planting potatoes so put that in my crop rotation plan :D
