My allotment site was hit by blight last week. Everone lost their toms. I've dug up the plants and left them in a heap. Am I right in thinking I need to burn these? And, Where they grew, I plan to sow runners next year. Do I need to treat the soil or can I just go on as normal? I rescued some green fruit that looks undamaged. They are in a propagator on my porch with a banana. As they look ok, will they be ok to eat. Thanks

In theory the spores can only overwinter on live plant material so you should be able to safely compost them, but I wouldn't feel happy about it and would put them in the green recycling bin (or burn them; might make me feel better!)

If they ripen OK, they are OK to eat (if they rot they obviously aren't - keep an eye on them and good luck.)

That's rotten luck Pete, the TN postcode has been getting these alerts as well.

Just watch your rescued toms carefully, and they may well be OK.

Don't leave the inspections too long though

I'm in TN postcode area and there is blight on the allotments .........luckily my spuds are already lifted and my toms are at home in the garden, mostly in the greenhouses

The 4 excess plants growing outside on a wigwam, look as if they have a touch of it, with black patches. but the tops still look really healthy, so I've picked all the ripening fruit and leave the green ones (plenty on there) and keep fingers crossed. I'm hoping the cold nights won't suit the blight and the toms may win the race and ripen! I'll keep an eye on them and see what develops

All my outdoor "normal" toms have been hit by blight.

I seem to have saved about a dozen decent sized tomatos that so far seem to be ripening off the plant without turning black...

Those in the greenhouse just next to the outdoor ones seem to have survived, though, which is a relief (although for some reason, they don't seem to want to turn red!) as have the two bush tomatos planted outside just around the corner (and still going great guns after 6 or 7 weeks supplying the family's lunches!
