Tomato Blight?
« on: May 17, 2009, 17:18 »
Here is a close up of one of my Bambino Tomato plants.  A lot of the lower foliage has turned like the leaf you can see here.  It starts with a purpling around the edges of the leaf, and slowly turns brown and the remaining leaf yellow.  I have been picking these off, but they are generally healthy.  I have sprayed them with Dithane just in case.

Is this blight?

My other plants (St Pierre) seem unaffected.

I do not think it is blight.

The symptoms look like the plant is short of potash. If it has been given standard tomato fertilizer to supply plenty of potash then it may have a poor root system and be unable to take in enough minerals?

How have you been feeding the plants?

Have they had any different treatment to the St Pierre?

Agree with Salmo, not blight and most likely a feed or trace deficiency.

And I agree with both replies. Definitely a Nutrient deficiency, though I thought magnesium. Give them a dollop of tom feed. :D

They are currently fed once a week, but sounds like they need 2 lots.  They are quite big (5 feet tall) and starting to carry to a crop, so this will probably help.

I had horror visions of losing the lot.

I water on average every three days.  I never water overhead into the pots thats why they look dry.  I feed straight into the empty flower pots (currently at a rate of about 1 litre for both plants in each bag).  I dont allow the grow bags to dry out at all.  I have pulled back the plastic on one and the bag is full of roots, so am confident it is getting water.

Looks like magnesium deficiency, a spoonful of magnesium sulphate (epsom salts) will sort it out.....as it does most things  :D

Oddly enough my Bambino are looking like that ever since I planted them into the greenhouse. They were planted  out at the same time as Ildi, San Marzano, Golden Sunrise, and Red Cherry. The Bambino are stunted and leaves turning colour. All have been treated in exactly the same way, water, feed etc..........interesting
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Am going to give the epsom salts a go (the woman in Boots asked if it was for me and I told her no, it is for my tomatoes.  She looked at me as if I was mad)

Will let you know how it goes.
