Should I be Feeding Seedlings?
« on: April 13, 2008, 17:23 »
I have a greenhouse full of seedlings that have been sewn from early feb to now - onions, leuttice, brasicas, peppers, squashes etc.

SHould I be feeding them as lots of them still seem tiny.

Rocket says 'ready for picking from 4 weeks)  I have got some 8 weeks old and they only have 4 leaves and are 5cm high - all stem.  I had the same last year and I have tried different composts including seed sewing compost.

I read that you shouldnt have to feed a seedling as potting them on will give them the extra nutrients from the extra compost, but many of mine arent even ready for potting on - theyre just not really growing much.
Avoid fruit and nuts.  You are what you eat.

I would have thought it was a temperature 5thing stunting growth than lack of nutrients, but what are they planted in?
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Where is Fermanagh?   Is that deep east Scotland?

Otherwise you can sow rocket outside in March. No, you don't feed seedlings.

Lack of light an/or heat of too early sowings in most cases, onions are a slow job, naturally.

Are serious? If you are it's Northern Ireland.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I didnt know where it was myself until we moved here!!!!  Its very nice however - 1/5th water (loughs, lakes + rivers), loads greenery and lovely folk!

I use general compost or seedling compost.  they are kept in the house or in the greenhouse.  my squashes seem to be doing good.

The rocket will be fine outside now. I've just transplanted a load into pots on my balcony.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

hi , there is enough nutrients in your compost to keep the seedlings going, its the cold nights that slow down their growth , just keep watering them

Don't worry about not knowing where Fermanagh is - the eastern half of Northern Ireland doesn't even know where Fermanagh is!!!!!!

The big city of Letterbreen - which is about 5 miles outside of Enniskillen on the road to Sligo.
