Too many Greens?
« on: June 08, 2009, 19:20 »
Can you give chickens too many greens?  My 3 ex-batts have unlimited access to layers pellets but every morning I give them greens (cabbage, grated carrot, grated courgette, carrots tops, chopped tomatoes and weeds.  They eat all that they are given!  Should I restrict the amount?  They have no other access to greens other than what I give them.

Is there an ideal weight that I should be giving them daily?

Don't want to kill them with kindness!!!!!

Wouldn't have thought so, mine free range all day eating grass, weeds etc and there is no way I could weigh that  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.

sorry to send the thread in another direction, but unlimited access to pellets, is it a case of when they are full they have had enough of can they have to much to eat and stop laying??

I have read on here that thats what others do.  Mine just seem to eat what they want of those and stop when they are full.  Now mealworms!  I think they'd eat a dustbin full of them if i'd let them.

Mealworms and mixed corn should be limited as they are high in fat (especially meal worms although my hens would eat a whole bucket load if they could). Layers and veggies are the best for them, fat hens do not lay apparently. wouldn't know for sure as mine spend a lot of the time running round chasing flies, mice etc so not fat.
