How to grow cucumbers
« on: May 03, 2011, 14:56 »
I have grown cucumbers for the past couple of years and done reasonably well.  both times grew Cucina but outside, not in a greenhouse so think I was very lucky to get away with it.  This year I have grown Rocky and Marketmore from seed and will be putting both outside.

In the past I have tied up the central stem to a cane so that the plant grows up but have never done anything with the side shoots - just let them hang down and I have always had about 10-12 cucumbers from each plant.

Having looked on various websites about growing cucumbers should I be training the side shoots along a trellis?  I don't want them to just grow along the ground as I don't really have enough room and I assume the slugs would eat them (they eat everything else!)  or should I just carry on doing what I have done in the past and just leave the side shoots hanging?

10 to 12 cucumbers per plant is a good harvest.
I grow Marketmore,
I tend to look for the tiny cucumbers forming on the side shoots then nip off the rest of the side shoot after it to one leaf (this is how i do my mellons too) once it has been fertilised so the growth then goes into the cucumber.

Then look for the next one forming higher up of on another side shoot and repeat the process.
I usually get the same amount per plant as you do and the are all well formed and filled out.

the BBC website says that all female varieties (cucino is one) fruit on the main stem, and to remove laterals altogether   BBC info here

I'm growing these as well this year, so wonder if your fruit was on the smain stem or on your hanging sideshoots

I grew five plants from seed of Burpless Tasty Green.  Three indoors only produced one fruit per plant and the two outside didn't fruit at all.
What did I do wrong? Is it too late to sow any more?

It is a bit late, but you can try by all means for some fruit to come along in August. I do not know what went wrong, but this one is an excellent, prolific variety. One can't move for cucumbers with 2 plants.

Sandy, I grow cukes on a trellis like frame. Or strong netting on support stakes. And they just sort themselves.

Try other varieties. 10 cukes is like saying I grew 2 corguettes this year. Marketmore for example, does not get a grand press from growers and writers.

They're probably an outdoor variety then, and probably Marketmore.
Did it give the variety on the pot/pack?

In my opinion they are the best tasting, you can grow them indoors or outdoors but you do get a larger crop indoors.

Indoors as in Greenhouse/poly tunnel or maybe even a conservatory.

Not in house livingroom/bedroom/kitchen.

   and why not?

My 'spare' cuke has ended up growing up to the curtain rail in the spare bedroom (where they were all started). The ones that went outside to the greenhouses look as if they are dying so I haven't the heart to move this one as it's fruiting nicely, but it's now 8ft tall  ;)
