just come in hot and sweaty from the garden after pulling my long awaited carrots some were not bad but others were growing back on them selves and i was a bit disappointed with the colour they were not the dark orange colour as promised in the pic on the front of the packet never the less there are a few being steamed for tea .
any ideas on the colour and the bent ones how can i improve the soil .
also Ive put some manure where they were growing and being limited for space can i plant some peppers in the same spot .

dig deeper to give them more room to go down, that should stop them coming back on themselves, and get as many stones as possible out.
I would never trust the pictures on the packets. real veg has natural colours, the photos will have been done under studio lighting, with perfect specimens, and all manner of photgraphic/processing effects and trickery. And they will have been selected as the best from hundreds of pictures. Yes, the 'camera never lies' phrase is a huge lie. I can make a camera show me anything i want (spacemen, flying saucers, ghosts, all easy)
if you have manured that bed now, then dont grow carrots on it next season

thanks for the help , we just ate some of the smaller ones and they were lovely and sweet .
i wanted to put my peppers in about a week or so , they are still small , everything seems to be slow this year .

Apparently the cooler the soil is the deeper the colour is and vice versa.
I suppose thats why my carrots are always deep orange 'cos it's always bl##dy freezing cold up here in Yorkshire :lol:

Ah that's the reason my pot carrots looked more like parsnips. (in colour not size!!!)
It is warm here!!!
