3 lil chicadees 3 lil questionees.............
« on: June 17, 2013, 18:15 »
Hello

1)  3x 10 week Pekins:  two quite tame and one quite flighty. Should I pick 'flighty' up each day to 'tame' her while she is young - would that make a difference or should I respect that nature make her a bit more aloof?

2) How soon can these girls learn to go to bed on the grown up perch at night?

3) Should we do treadle feeder training soon too?  Will use a weight to compensate their light weight until they grow up.  I like food to be mouse/rat proof.
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

I would try hand feeding them all and not make any sudden movements.  Just take your time so she doesn't see you as a threat.

My chicks with broody perch from a few weeks old in the run so it will be a matter of lifting them on to the perch when they are sleepy.  You should only have to do it for a few nights and they usually get the idea and start perching themselves.

Sorry I have never used a treadle feeder so can't advise on that.   :)

My three pekins are same age as yours and so so funny. They are part of the small flock now but in an adolescent sort of way which makes me laugh out loud at them. Not pick up friendly yet due to careful broody upbringing but are happy to run to me for treats. The boy,  bless him is amazing, he chases the cats well away from his patch an is already so full of himself I'm sure he'll soon clash with my gentle sabelpoot boys. Will sadly have to rehome him but until then will enjoy his antics and let him rule his little roost. Good luck with taming your 'little maids'

Thanks so much.  Perch training when getting dark then :)

I sit on my doorstep and Chocky is straight onto my lap looking for food but Lavvy keeps her distance and I don't think I can change nature. She feeds from my hand but is quick to back off.

After just two weeks they are so different - well groomed and a lovely shape. Was going to trim foot feathers but might leave them now.

Had fun on Sunday observing a Serama Cockrell rounding his girls up - thought of Foggy! He did attack the owners legs though hence thick trousers!!!!

Went in tonight with sandals and bare feet and he didn't bother.  He must think my walking shoes are another male quail - 'should have gone to specsavers'!!

  It could be that as he tries to peck at me which is what he does when grabbing hold of their head feathers.  Think he definitely needs glasses.   ::)

they will still flick the food around. The run area should be ratproof, mice get through very small holes. I use a hanging water and feeder. I also keep  the pellets in it's sack in a metal dustbin, free from freecycle.

Thank you grinling. Might try some treadle feeder training soon - they are clever little girls so should learn.

Having some fun building ramps and finding dead branches to insert horizontally in my shrubs so they can climb and sit in them.

You could use some florists wire or similar to fix the branches in place so they don't roll and tip the girls off.   ;)

Great idea!  Might pop up to the woods to find dead branches etc.  Honestly whatever did I do PH (prehen)?!
