Hi,I've never grown celery before and now the seedlings are ready to transplant,I'm not sure how deep to plant them!on the pack it says 'just so foliage is showing'but there is foliage halfway up and again at the top?anyone know?thanks

Are they self blanching or a trench variety?

er,not sure,'cos it says just to keep earthing them up.They are called Green Utah.

Green Utah is a self blanching variety, no need to earth up. :wacko:

Ice are you sure its self blanching hard to find on google but the three I found say earth up. Sorry Flump only know about self blanching varieties. One site did say your green utah was challenging to grow whatever that means.
Click on this link and look at suffolk herbs it tells you how deep.

Hard to read so incase you can't squint youeyes to see that it says 30cm deep.

I am growing celery for the first time and have chosen Green Utah. The seed came from Kings and their instructions say to earth up as the plant grows. I did some research and it is a self blanch type, which suggests a contradiction.
My problem will be maintaing watering so I will dig a trench and put newspaper at the bottom with some manure. I intend to wrap newspaper around some to see what the difference would be.
I haven't considered how deep to plant them. (Sclarke624 mentions 30 cm, which would be at the bottom of a trench which is not needed for this variety)

Yeah I don't know for sure was just quoting from the suffolk seeds pack from the link I gave, where there is pics of the back of the packs with figures.

I grow Green utah every year and although they're typed as self-blanching, they really aren't. They can become quite bitter without some sort of blanching. As are, they're great for soups and such but not so wonderful for eating unless blanched. Decide what you want them for and proceed as such.

I grew this last year to great effect - was dead chuffed. Basically pricked out, grew on in pots in unheated greenhouse, planted out late May when well established, watered heavily throughout summer. Tried using kitchen roll tubes to help blanch them, but they just began to rot so not going to bother this year. Remeber to just cut off the outside stems at the bottom in a cut and come again fashion.
They were delicious raw when picked young, and as they became more mature, started using them for soups, stocks and stews. Really missed them when the heavy frosts killed em off late autumn.
So my recommendation is just throw them in and enjoy! If you are asking how deep to bury the seedlings when potting on, dunno - I guess like other veg, up to level of 1st true leaves if you are worried they are leggy?

From all the answers and to answer your question it seems that you need to earth up to the uppermost leaves. :)
Next year try something less taxing. :lol:

It was the easiest thing I grew last year (my 1st proper year)! I'm standing up for celery this year 8)
