As long as the ground isn't frozen solid, you should be able to plant it and it should be fine. Mine isn't in the ground yet and I'm quite a bit further north than you. :)

I'm in Oldham and mine haven't gone in yet. My onion bed don't look as though it's going to get dug this week, then it'll probs be raining next. I may pot them up in the cold greenhouse to start them off and then transplant when the weathermen get the forecast right.

I have planted all my onions and most of my garlic in plastic drinking cups and will put them out when the weather is kinder.  I do this every year and get great onions and garlic.

Hi,

This time last year I had just got my plot. I think I planted my garlic around March/April. I still got useful plants out of the ground. Though obviously not as big as if I had planted them months earlier. :)

It's always worth a shot I say!

Cheers,
Craig

I missed the boat last year and didn't end up planting until February. The bulbs were smaller than I would have like, but they did (mostly) still split into cloves and form proper bulbs.

Most, but not all, garlic can be planted in either autumn or early spring - some need longer to grow to their full potential so should be planted in autumn but in most cases the crop will just be a bit later if spring planted.

RHS's take on it is HERE, including information about how much cold they need to trigger the bulb to split into cloves.

I re-plant saved garlic (originally from a supermarket - bit risky and not really recommended!) in mid February and for the last few years it's done really well and is ready in July.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
