Sowed a pot of Brussels Sprouts a few weeks ago and they've come to nothing

Am I too late to try again now ?

Do you actually physically heel them or just firm them in as hard as you can with your hands ??

I push the soil down with my foot  ;)

I do that after I've initially run over the soil with a very heavy lawn roller. (Not if it's wet!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I tread mine down first doing what Mr Sunny calls the Geoffrey shuffle, as he saw Geoff Hamilton on TV doing this once.

We have raised beds, and it is almost the only time I tread on the soil.

I do have a question about sprouts too though (Sorry to hijack your thread Geordie but I thought it would keep it all together)

What height are your sprout plants when you put the big stake in for them?

Interesting tip firming the soil, I haven't read that on other insturction sites - thanks!  I did read that you should plant them out around 3 months before the first frosts because they don't like warm weather so much.  Would you guys plant them later on in the summer, around august?  This will be my first attempt at sprouts so thanks for starting this thread Geordie as its very helpful  ;)

Mine will be getting planted out next week.

They don't seem to know about not liking hot weather --maybe the debris netting they will be under in the key.

DD told me he never stakes his plants.

We have such windy site that they blow over even when firmed in like concrete and earthed up, so I am going to have to work out the best time to add the stake.

A cane is insufficient so I have to use wooden poles a bit like old fashioned growers use for dahlias
