The dreaded moment arrived today............
« on: August 27, 2007, 22:14 »
............to pick my first cucumber. I was dreading it being bitter or dry or generally inedible. I've never grown them (or any veg for that matter) before.

But..............DELICIOUS!!!

Needless to say, I've eaten half of it already.
There's a couple more on the way but most of the rest are rotting off at a couple of inches, which is a shame.

But one is better than none so I'm really chuffed.

Ahhh, so pleased for you Fletch, isn't it lovely when you eat something for the first time that you've grown yourself???

And it happens every year too.  I love everything I grow, but the first things every year are extra special!!!!

Woah!
I too picked my very first cucumber ever yesterday!!

It was probably 7 inches long and quite a fat one. The outside of mine are quite spikey still so I peeled it.

Delish!
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

i grew marketmore cucumbers in the greenhouse and whilst they grew a bumber crop, the first few tasted delicious , but subsequent ones have been tasting bitter.  i understand this is something to do with flowers being pollinated???

but i was advised against removing the male flowers

i've got an all female f1 also and this doesn't have this problem.
