RE: moving apple trees
« on: February 14, 2013, 13:30 »
hi
i would like some advice on whether it is okay to move some apple trees from my garden to the allotment.  I live in the south east and just got rid of the last of the snow.  Any suggestions?

Get them moved as soon as possible before they start growing.

If the top branches are quite big it may be worth pruning them back a bit, to give the trees a chance for the roots to regrow, as you're bound to break some when you dig them up ;)

Keep them well watered through the summer (if the sky doesn't do it for you ::) )

Have you double checked:

a) whether you are allowed trees at all; and

b) whether there is a maximum size for the tree?

Some allotment growers have maximum size fruit trees and it decimates the growing conditions on their plot and, unfairly, on their neighbours' plots because of the shade, roots, and competition for light / water / nutrients.  I always urge people to consider which rootstock the tree is on before they do something irrevocable.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
